SHERIDAN, IN - The Sheridan Blackhawks opened their season with a grueling, hard-fought battle against a ranked 3A Maconaquah Braves team, falling 42-27. Despite the final score, the Hawks proved they can go toe-to-toe with top competition, pushing the Braves into the fourth quarter before Maconaquah finally managed to pull away by two scores with a late TD drive in the 4th. Senior quarterback Brock Hagan came out firing to lead the aerial attack. Hagan completed 19 of 31 passes for 259 yards and 3 touchdowns. His primary target of the night was senior wideout Landon Moffitt, who proved to be a matchup nightmare for the Braves' secondary. Moffitt hauled in 7 receptions for 93 yards and found the end zone twice. Senior Brody Heck also chipped in with several big time grabs tallying 6 receptions for 75 yards. On the ground attack, senior RB Hayden Alexander embodied the Blackhawks' grit. Facing a stacked Maconaquah front seven, Alexander had to earn every single inch, finishing with 80 yards rushing on 20 carries to keep the offense balanced and sustaining drives. While a loss is never the desired outcome, the pride in this Sheridan squad is undeniable. They went head-to-head with a very good 3A opponent, showed zero quit, and gave fans a relentless fight from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. "Our message to the guys was we're going to get so much better from this game. That's a good team we played, adn we played them to the last whistle," Coach Jake Chesney said. UP NEXT FOR THE HAWKS The Blackhawks won't have much time to rest as the tough non-conference slate continues. Sheridan hits the road next week for another tough matchup when they travel to Alexandria to take on the Tigers.
